So here we are at the start of a new year in the Jewish calendar. Rosh Hashanah has come and now we look to be inscribed into the book of life for another year on Yom Kippur next week.

During this time we honor a tradition of Teshuvah where we break down our old practices and strive to be a better version of ourselves. As you can see, we have embarked on a long awaited (I mean really super long awaited) renovation of our kitchen space at 2 McCraw Street. We are building ourselves back up! This renovation will interrupt some of our previous services (like sandwiches) until we reopen our doors in a few months. Our hope is that you will support us while we get smaller to get bigger. How can you do that?

Many of you are already ordering from our new CATERING page through Toast. *We are no longer on BentoBox. We encourage you to utilize the catering site for all your preorder bulk needs. And if your office or club are looking for morning-lunch catering, please throw our hat in the mix.

In response to many suggestions, we have made our platters all inclusive with bagels and spreads included in the price. We hope this makes for an easier more enjoyable ordering option.

You can still pickup and order from the windows on McCraw street for the near future. However, the service room behind the windows will also become part of the scope of our renovation and we will cease to serve out of them. We are working on our response to that loss of distribution. Stay tuned for that.

So all that to say…we are SO excited to embark on this next chapter, in this new year, with all of you. We adore our neighborhoods of Rozzie, JP, Westy, Hyde Park, Dorchester, South End, Roxbury…oh forget it. We adore you BOSTON - let’s face it, you’re coming here from all over the place. 😮‍💨🥹🏆

For the past 3 years we at Exodus have been implementing a 13% Administrative Fee on every sale. All employees at Exodus receive a base hourly wage (above minimum wage) and this was meant as an addition to their pay. Our goal was to create a pay structure that would be beneficial to the employee. In the restaurant industry it is against wage laws to disperse tips to the back of house employees which historically created a disparity of earnings between FOH & BOH. This was our workaround. To be clear, management and ownership were never included in this dispersement. Employees from all departments split this fee collected on every sale for the week; sort of a profit sharing. If the restaurant had a big week, the staff saw it in their paychecks.

Additionally in the restaurant industry, staffing can be inconsistent. There might be 9 people scheduled for a given shift but 2 people call out or are not available. In a stagnant structure the employee makes their base wage no matter what. In the Admin Fee structure, the employee made more money given those absences. This was working well for our employees.

We did our best to communicate to our customers about our Admin Fee: on our website, on our online ordering page, signs at the order window and printed largely on every receipt. In other words we were not trying to hide this aspect of our business. Over the 3 years we received complaints about the fee but most people were understanding after further explanation. Some people (online) complained that we should pay our employees fairly and to stop using the customer to pay our staff. 🤔…um….huh? Even with the fractional pushback, we felt like it was working and that the staff was worth the heat.

Enter @mass_ago new Junk Fees Regulations (940 CMR 38). These regulations are meant as a consumer protection model and of course we are in favor of protecting all customers. These new regulations are meant to create “price transparency” for the customer. They require businesses to include any fees into the price of each product/service.

Took this picture back in 2010 when the Hirsh/LaBrie/Shatsky/Charlton families showed me all the spots they grew up, broke up, and came back together over the years. Wiley’s Bait Shop and Cholada (formerly The Spaghetti Joint) are now in ashes. So much heartache, so much loss, so much devastation.

We’re reminded that there’s no “over there” this wildfire is connected to the floods in North Carolina (where there are people we love), and hurricanes in Florida (where there are people love), and power blackouts in Puerto Rico (donde estan tantos que amamos con todo el corazon). To our West Coast family: we love you!

There’s a lot more to say/do and stop saying/doing. I’m taking heed from my ‘nothermistersister @little.earth.creature :

We’re working with a skeleton crew all weekend so we’re limiting the menu, removing the toasting option and hiding special requests. Preorders should also pickup at the window and not through the door.

We hope these adjustments will make wait times less severe. We always strive to get you all what you want, but these compromises to our service make it possible to open at all with such a small weekend team.

We are working on more permanent fixes to the menu for the near future as we ready ourselves for a pivot to construction (someday) soon. Please follow along for those updates.

We’re working with a skeleton crew all weekend so we’re limiting the menu, removing the toasting option and hiding special requests. Preorders should also pickup at the window and not through the door.

We hope these adjustments will make wait times less severe. We always strive to get you all what you want, but these compromises to our service make it possible to open at all with such a small weekend team.

We are working on more permanent fixes to the menu for the near future as we ready ourselves for a pivot to construction (someday) soon. Please follow along for those updates.
